so not a lot of small production companies in his area? Should he look
to Sydney?

I Live in Brisbane, and even though I call myself a boomie, the reality of the situation is that there isn't enough drama production to sustain more than 2 crews at any one time (most of the stuff that comes through here is picked-up by the admittedly experienced sound-teams).

Martin is very correct about the amount of work generated in Brisbane (almost none), most of the non-drama stuff (TVC/corporate/docos) is coming from Sydney to make use of our lovely locations, and slightly lower wages. News is a good place to try and get a foot in the door, as all 4 major networks have their own local on-staff camera crews who are expected to learn sound, and when the going is tough they will hire to the local sound freelancers.

there is a fairly regular reality programming scene, non-locations based (ie: big brother/I'm a celebrity) and I know quite a few guys who make a living bouncing from one production to the next. They're shot to take advantage of the skilled crew-members with very little overlap of schedules.

Warners is pretty much dead at the moment, there have been a grand total of 5 films in the last 3 years, with the occasional kids TV show.

Brisbane is a really good town to live in though, within an hour of world-class beaches (both north and south), and still large enough of a city to not feel hokey.

so I'd recommend Sydney for a greater amount of work, but brissie is worth a look
