I only objected to you saying that Digidesign had "only approved SCSI,"
That's simply not true.
I know of many, many TV shows and feature films here in LA that are routinely
mixed with Firewire. Is SCSI faster and heavier duty? Absolutely -- SCSI is
a better (albeit more expensive) way to go. But that wasn't the question.
And Firewire does work just fine for many, many users. My point was that
there are workable alternatives to SCSI for Pro Tools users.
BTW: Digi never approved FW400...

Excuse me, but you haven't read the compatibility document:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
FireWire Hard Drive Requirements
with Pro Tools Systems on Mac OS X & OS 9
Pro Tools System Compatibility
FireWire 400 Hard Drives
The Avid MediaDrive rS80, DigiDrive FireWire 80, and third-party 7200 RPM
FireWire 400 drives with the Oxford 911 chipset have been qualified for
record and playback with the following Mac & Windows systems...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note that Digidesign actually *manufactures and sells* several different
Firewire 400 drive. In fact, I don't know of any Firewire 800 drives they
make.
I absolutely agree that a 6-slot Mac is needed, and that was the first thing
I said in my message. But I also reported that every time I've asked why
Apple doesn't make a 6-slot desktop machine, both Digidesign and Apple give
me excuses. If I press it, they just tell me to buy the 6-slot expansion
chassis (at $2395).
Finally: again, the only "Pro" Mac released so far is the MacBook Pro, which
is only a portable. Apple has not used the word "Pro" with their desktop
computers -- yet, anyway. I agree with the many others about how the word
"Pro" gets abused far too much, to the point where it doesn't mean anything
anymore.
And I totally agree that Apple does make some weird decisions. On the plus
side, I think they generally make some pretty smart decisions, and they're
right more than they're wrong.
