Do you have any citations for this? With all due respect Jeff...where did
you come up with this? I just spent about 15 minutes searching with various

Please, Charlie, if you are going to do all the legwork on this issue,
look at the release dates for printers, just a simple example, that had
USB connectivity... let me know if you know anyone of your fellow PC
users that had a printer or a keyboard or a mouse hooked up to USB prior
to the release of the iMac. To the best of my knowledge, virtually all
printers were connected to parallel printer ports on PCs, keyboards and
mouse were connected to ps/2 connectors, drives and other peripherals
(that were not networked with network printers being a rarity in
personal computers) used SCSI, etc., etc. I don't think the printer
manufacturers even had USB print drivers (since you are a long term
Windows users you could probably check on the driver support prior to
the release of the iMac. I bought my first iMac on August 15, 1998, the
first day they were released.

please don't tell us that a computer that at the time held a miniscule
market share was somehow responsible for widespread adoption of the USB
interface which was being implemented and promoted by a large
consortium of manufactures that did not include Apple in it's
membership list.

There was "a 'large' consortium of manufacturers" (I cannot vouch for
how large) pushing the adoption of USB, a port that was present in
almost every PC made, but they weren't getting anywhere. I still stand
by my assertion that It was the presence of the first iMac that really
got the ball rolling. One simple example, a personal one, casts some
doubt in my mind with your statement that USB already had all this
support in the PC world --- when I went out looking for a printer for
the new iMac in 1998, when looking at Fry's. CompUSA, and so on, I
really could not find many printers that were even equipped with USB at
the time.

I will try and dig up some of the articles I have clipped on this
subject even though at this time I have lost most of my enthusiasm for
this topic.
