Re: Low Levels?

I have done plenty of shoots with the 100(A) and have set tone to 2
notches past the white contrast bar (-18dbfs) and rode levels with max
peaks into the red and have never had a complaint in the past. I have
recently began to roll tone at the -12 blob and then back the levels
down to -16, still peaking well into the red. This seems to work much
better, less noise on the already noisy return (i use the RCA's to
monitor) and I'm giving them hotter levels. Both methods have worked
well with no complaints so I think that yes you can ride levels hotter
to tape in the future but I have a strong feeling that there is an
operator error somewhere in post !

I sort of don't think so. Most miniDV shoots are ingested via
firewire, and the levels in the project are what they were on the
camera. When I get an OMF for audio post from an FCP edit I see the
original levels (FCP doesn't export audio clip levels) and they are
often VERY low when this camera has been used.
