Used to be 0 VU meant something universal...
Only on a line amp feeding a telephone line directly, back in the days
when that actually happened.
On an analog recorder, it could mean whatever magnetic strength (in nW/m)
the box was calibrated for, and that was only the record level. Playback
level depended on the stock (and how well it was aligned for that stock).
That's why we recorded zero tone.
(In a broadcast master console, it could mean 100% mod... but usually didn't...)
Digital workflow is a lot more sensible in that regard. The level recorded
in the camera, in dBFS, is the level in the NLE and the level we get in
audio post.
The problem is that editors don't understand what that level means. And
the fact that most NLEs and DAWs display envelopes linearly (instead of
log) just makes that worse.
