Cameras were DVX100 shooting 24p
I used a SD 442 with limiter set at +9, line out to line in on 3
cameras + 4th cam got 1 mono mic out to mic in.
1 left and 1 right channel splitter on XLR out, 1 out was 10(?) pin,
and a mono mic out to 4th cam(for reference).
Set tone at where the black meets white on color bars( "0" level) on
all cams.
Audio sounded good(as good as can be on that return)
Visually monitored levels on cam. Lowest they went was three bars,
highest was 1 bar in red. averaged a little above what i set as "0". I
rode the faders and saw limiters engage only when talent was laughing
Those levels are a bit low for mini DV and for the DVX100. The point where
the big white line is should be your -20 = 0 setting on the 442. Set your
442 limiters for about +10 and hit them on the peaks. You should see LOTS of
red on the DVX 100. The big white line (-12) should be considered 0 for the
purposes of VU averages. Mixing to DV takes a bit more work than mixing to a
camera with more usuable dynamic range...meaning you need to ride levels
manually a bit more and bring up quiet sections and rely on your limiters to
bail you out on unexpected loud transients. You can always set one of the
"four" cameras a few db lower if you are nervous, but my experience has been
that you can hit them pretty hard without penalty.
I recieved the following email:
1. The audio is way too low when we're taping. [ Editors Name] wasn't
able to
make audio adjustments because he had maxed the audio out. Too many
highs and lows in the conversation. This has to bet adjusted. Please
talk to the audio person on Wednesday.
I do not know what they are using to edit. I have another shoot with
them soon and I asked them to bring an original tape from that shoot.
I can't really see how there was a screw up on my end, but i would
appreciate any input.
I would humbly tell them that you might have been a bit cautious for
safeties sake given the nature of recording to inexpensive cameras and that
you will give them hotter levels next time around.
