Re: 302 mixer issue when monitoring via Stereo Return with Sony cine alta

-Hey Phil. Don't worry about that particular setting on the SDX-900.
That needs to stay ON, as all it does is turn ON or OFF the sound being
output from any of those ports. It's a "power saving" feature, but
better left ON. How much power can it really save to have this OFF?

I know that the L/Mix/R switch affects the 5 pin in the rear of the
SDX900, as it does not on the Sony.

-That's right. Odd, but true. A quick rundown of monitoring
selections only:

*F-900. The MONITOR SELECT switch on the side of the camera (near the
volume wheel) is still the same old CH-1/Mix/CH-2 (or L/Mix/R) switch.
Whatever is selected is output to the speaker or headphone jack. That
volume wheel on the side of the camera controls the speaker or
headphone jack.

What is output from the 5 pin in the rear must be selected on the VTR
SETUP page in the menus, but keep in mind that the only selection
choice there is CH1/2 or CH3/4. So audio out of the 5 pin on the F-900
is always stereo. No selection there for a mix or mono signal from the
5 pin. No volume/level output control of the 5 pin.

*SDX-900. The MONITOR SELECT switch on the side of the camera (under
the time code window) is different. In fact, there's two of them, side
by side. They work in tandem with each other, and they control what is
output to the speaker, the headphone jack, AND the 5 pin audio out
connector! One MONITOR SELECT switch toggles between CH1/2 or CH3/4.
The other MONITOR SELECT switch works in tandem with whatever you've
chosen, and the choices for the second switch are CH1/3, ST, CH2/4.
Maybe easier to think of as Left/Stereo/Right.

The volume wheel on the side of the SDX-900 controls the speaker or
headphone jack. The volume/level of the 5 pin is adjustable from a VTR
MENU item on the MIC/AUDIO2 page called AUDIO OUT LVL, but the only
choices are 0dB or +4dB. There's also an item on that same page called
MONITOR SELECT which allows you to chose either STEREO or MIX. This
refers back to the ST selection on the side of the camera. So if this
menu item is set to MIX, your ST selection on the side of the camera is
actually a mono mix selection, which you will hear from the headphone
jack and the 5 pin connector.

Sounds confusing, but the default position for that menu item is
STEREO, so this is typically what you should get when you select ST on
the side of the camera. And if it's easier, just keep in mind that on
the SDX-900, what you select on the side of the camera is what you
should be getting out of all ports (speaker, headphone and 5 pin).

*Varicam. Similar to the SDX-900 monitoring choices, but much simpler.
Again, two MONITOR SELECT switches (under the time code window), side
by side. They control what is output to the speaker and the headphone
jack. One MONITOR SELECT switch allows the choice of CH1, 1/2, CH2.
The other MONITOR SELECT switch toggles between ST (stereo) and MIX
(mono mix), and refers back to your 1/2 setting of the first switch.
This only affects the headphone jack. The volume wheel controls the
speaker or the headphone jack.

Similar to the F-900, the Varicam 5 pin audio output is always stereo.
No menu selection for a mix or mono signal from the 5 pin. No
volume/level output control of the 5 pin. Line level.

-Phil, I think what you were hearing on your F-900 vs. SDX-900 multicam
(no, I won't ask) was the SDX-900 in that MIX mode. I've
intermittently found that MIX setting noisy/phasey on the SDX-900
output (and again, if it's set to MIX in the VTR menu, it's outputing a
mono mix to the speaker, headphone jack, and the 5 pin output when
you're in the ST monitor selection). It's very rare, but I have heard
it sound crappy before. Could have been mics out of phase once the
camcorder did it's own mix? Hate to bad-mouth the SDX-900 as it
typically sounds great.

-Anyway, it's possible that the return on the SDX-900 in that MIX mode
sounded even worse than the return of the F-900. Hard to imagine, but
it's possible.

-P.S. Oleg's specs he brought up about the F-900 are dead on - true to
my experience as well.
