Hey Ron,
Thanks for the info on the PSC. I have to say I am really suprised
that the headphone volume not going fully off was a intended feature.
I have had quite a bit of misdirected anger boiling up inside of me for
the last year+ when I thought that my client had unproperly functioning
psc gear, but now I realize it is a design feature and I have to admit
my anger is now directed toward PSC. I really cant imagine why any
operator of the mixer would find this feature helpful. I dont know of
any piece of audio gear that you can't shut the heaphone volume off (of
course there may be a piece of gear that does this, I just am not aware
of it.) . I respect that you have a fix for this if requested but
again, I really think it is not a very helpful feature to begin with,
instead I feel it is harmful. Run and gun cable design type shows,
documentary, news, etc. rarely have any true consideration for the
health of the crew. The talent in these production are sometimes
trained actors but more often then not is untrained often they shout
and scream, (often at times haveing nothing to do with the show,
sometimes even yelling direct into the mic to be funny....or they think
that they are funny) they smack their mics, they operate loud machinery
etc...... So I would hope we can at least hope our equipment will help
protect us. I would hope our equipment would at least give us the
opportunity to shut them out if we need to. Wearing headphones with the
volume off often gives us a extra level of protection from loud sounds,
having a loud sound amplified in our ear (even if it its is -20db from
max)and not being able to shut it off,I dare to say cant be healthy.
I totaly respect that you made a decision to keep the heaphone volume
max lower then other mixers(although this is definitely one reason I do
not own a psc).
I guess to sum it up. You are obviously concerned with your products,
and the operators who use it. I am a very confident that I am a case
study for you as an operator that was effected by your product, I
would recommend this feature to be removed and allow users to have full
volume control.
I have never posted to Ramps I have always just been a lurker, when I
saw this thread begin, I had to jump in. like I said my ears ring now,
and every day that they ring I think of my experience the day that it
began with the mixer I used, and the functionality of that mixer. I now
somewhat fear what my future holds as a mixer, I wonder what this ring
will do to my ability to mix, but I have a feeling there are alot of
mixers with a ring in there ear and are successful. If I sound
dramatic, I am just being honest.....
I also realize I could have just called you and not posted this, but I
wanted it to be on the record.
Take care,
JEff
