" Otherwise you need to power the HD external.
Question would be, why would you put a Hub in between ? I assume your
Deva has a powered 6 pin bus, correct ? "
The hub is just to isolate the main FW cable. I've had many cables go
bad. I'd rather not plug and unplug the FW from my main deck (It's in
a tight space) up to 4 times a day. And yes, the Deva has 6 pin, bus
power FW.
"Why load 50 DVD RAMS ( that are
very slow most of the time ) if you can swap it from a HD.
Making that HD is less work ( in my setup at least ) then writing a
bill."
Well they have to load 50 of something. Everyday I have to deliver the
sound, either on DVD or HD. Each day post has to load that into their
system. When the sound editing team comes in they have either the 50
or so original DVD's, or whatever the picture people have loaded those
50 DVD's into. At least they have the DVD's. If we were swapping
hard drives everyday (or say rotating 5 or 6), the only sound available
to the sound editors would be what the picture people have loaded into
their system. And what if the Avid drive crashes. There is no
original picture on the drive, but if there are no DVD's they have the
master sound on the Avid drives. I keep my DVD's for a while, but as
soon as I start another film I start over writing those drives. And
who is to say they loaded stuff correctly, or whether they loaded all
tracks or just the tracks they needed. I'm much more comfortable with
re-burning everything at the end of the show. But at least with the
DVD's the sound editors have an exact copy of what is on my hard
drives. In the end all we're talking about is a brief chore.
And yes, with the Deva, I have to copy each partition seperately.
There's no 'swapping disks' involved because I'm copying from one hard
drive to another. Hopefully soon Zaxcom will write a simple program to
copy an entire hard drive. But yes, it is a chore.
"Basically on what one is delivering, is a bit moot, imo. As long as
production pays for the time , i copy whatever they like, to whatever
they like."
Bingo.
