We're still kind of dancing around this one and I still think it is
primarily a semantic issue. Courtney, could you please chime in here to
explain this more clearly?
I still maintain that any "burning to disk" with the 744T needs to be
done by routines within the host computer that is presiding over the
actual disk drive "burner" you are using. So, the software on your
computer that is involved in this operation has to get its hands on the
files somehow, so they are transferred from the hard drive in the 744T
via Firewire and into your computer, right? Depending on what host "disk
burning" software you are using, and there are many including most
probably a utility that is part of your OS, the files may or may not be
copied to your hard drive. Toast, for example, I believe caches the
files to be burned, and this is not a RAM cache but a cache temp on the
hard drive. When the burning session is complete and you are ready to
quit the Toast application, if you don't "save" the session, the files
are purged from the cache.

The Firewire protocol is still needed no matter what part of this
routine we have described properly or not --- Firewire, if that is the
connection that is being used, is the only way the host computer can use
the files residing on the 744T drive. It has to transfer them, copy
them, pull them across, something, to have them be accessible to the
other media you wish them to be on --- in this case some blank optical
disk sitting in your computer's disk drive waiting to be burned. Have I
got something wrong here?

The Fostex utility will do just that and it is available for both Mac
and Windows. From the Fostex site: 'BWF Manager' is a software utility
application that enables the user to analyze a selected BWF(Broadcast
Wave Format) poly format file and create individual BWF mono files for
each track of the poly format file.

If in fact I have this wrong about burning disks directly from the 744T
and you can in fact burn files directly without any involvement of your
computer, then the Fostex utility would obviously not help in this
regard. I sincerely believe that with the 744T you will need to transfer
- copy the poly files, if it is poly file format you are using, to your
computer, use the Fostex utility to split out the track(s) you want,
then burn a disk.
