We routinely get DAT tapes from several lower-budget feature and TV projects
at Technicolor/Hollywood. Our non-linear department transfers all this
material to DVD-RAM, logs the takes, and we use the discs during the telecine
dailies transfer. There are also a few fairly big-budget shows that used DAT
very recently; INTO THE WEST for Dreamworks/TNT is one I can remember, and it
sounded fine.
Also, my experience is that 90% of the commercial dailies we get are still
being provided on DAT. If there's time available, we'll dub the material
before the dailies session to DVD-RAM, but if not, we transfer directly to
videotape from the DAT. We prefer to do it from DVD simply because that
eliminates any problem with pre-roll, particularly in tail-slate situations.
