Hi Fernando,
This might come late but here it goes:
I did an shot an Hewlett-Packard advertising film, with the Williams F1
team, in the Estoril racing track here in Portugal.
Besides recording sounds around the track and on the pits, the
production then asked if i could get some sounds to cover the driver´s
POV.
At first we discussed with the car engineers what would the options be
on attaching a Sony TCD-D10 pro2 Dat recorder to the car, they did it
themselves by screwing the dat cover to the right side of the car (on
the vertical under the plastics ) and them sliped the machine inside
the cover. It was clean and simple for them to do it.
As for the microphone it was even easier, the cars have already
pre-installed locations for mini-cams and mics. just run a small cable
and grip it tight also.
As for the microphone choice..., the first run i was dumb enough to
think a MK-41 capsule would be nice ( because of the size )...so we
added a 48V supply to the Dat "rig" and of it went....obviously there
was so many SPL on the mic that it completely overloaded ( rec level
was really low, and you set it before the car goes out, i was lucky and
got 2 runs)
For the second run, i remembered i had a dynamic Shure SM-57 somewhere
in the van and i knew that it had to be that one. I was right...an
handheld microphone fits just right on the car´s mic holder ( also
under the plastics , over the right air inlet), installed it , turned
the rec level even lower ( to about 2 or 3 on the knob ) and off it
went into the track.
It came back to the pit, and damn it was a good recording!!! it worked
really well, and the F1 car engineers are pretty used to install stuff
on those babys.
I can´t remenber exactlly what kind of "wind cover" i made for it, but
i believe it was somethink like a small piece of black flannel ( one of
those used on sets ).
good luck for your gig, and let me know how you worked it out.
regards,
Bernardo Six Costa
