Both schools of thought are valid - however, never buy a 'pig in a poke'.
You have a 1/2 million dollar edit suite to come to work to, you're - I
assume - skilled at your job and you have a steady paycheck. That's enough
to for me to say - "Stay where you are". OTOH, challenges can make make a
person grow and that's good too. This is only my opinion, but it sounds like
you're doing well for a youngish guy - think about that for a while. They're
are plenty of 'kids' willing to do free-bees just to get where your are now.
Yes, Editing, Colorists and 'dust-busters' all envy your job. If you wanna'
take a chance, go for it - the cold, sweltering heat without a Winnie might
change your mind after a while.
I'm not offering advice, but the grass is always greener until you
realise.....it's gonna' turn into a 'job' sooner or later. I've done 20
years of color correction: beautiful suites, free lunches and meeting more
(jackass) celebreties than I care to mention. The only consistent thing is:
The 'thrill' or enjoyment of making good looking pictures is still my reason
to get out of bed. The hours, the BS and the sheer nonsense of compliling
with the demands of the client have made me cyncial beyond my own
imagination. We make movies and television - this ain't important work. Yet,
I take pride in doing a good job, that's what I'm paid to do. You're 30 huh?
Wait until your 40 or 50 and see if you feel the same way. Be blessed you
have a great job, many folks would kill to work in an edit suite.
Good luck,
Mike T
