Re: SD 744 Reliability ( No Flaming)

I had a serious incident during my last feature - 2 thirds into the game I
couldn't access some of the (audio) folders and a day later all audio files
were inaccessible. That was a serious hit having something to do with
firewire (I'm on a Mac) though it's unclear exactly what.

I had a back-up for all files so I didn't lose anything. Nevertheless since
then I haven't used firewire to transfer files to my computer, only CF
cards. The problem was never fixed and while it may not happen every day or
every week it happened once;-(

That doesn't mean that there is a reliability problem, I love the 744, even
appreciate its tinyness that made me crazy at the beginning but there are a
few issues that are somewhat overdue to be fixed:

a dependable firewire connection is the most important one. It's also still
not possible to attach a firewire dvd writer to the 744 for delivery - one
must schlepp a computer onto the set, transfer all files to the computer and
then write the files to a DVD with the computer. That's a very silly thing
to do after wrap is called and the lights are going away and somebody is
tapping his/her foot to get the DVD so they can take it to telecine........

Besides that some other features beg to be finally implemented (mono
monitoring, storage of user setups - to name the more important ones) the
744 is a fine machine I wouldn't hesitate to recommend.
