You bring up some interesting points.
surely the combination of sound and video assist into a 4-man team (possibly 5 for the massive jobs) will only occur when the technology gets to the point where it's easier to do.
I guess we're looking at more of a single recording format for vision/audio, like a remote camera via optical fibre to the recording deck - think StarWars epIII. It would definitely make sense to feed the master audio to the recording device and remove the need for synchronisation.
when it's more common, then the PM's will look to consolidate crew.
there'll still be a need for individual people to: swing a pole with a mic on the end. listen to and adjust the audio (with a critical ear) monitor and record the video/audio assist the "department" - with all the extra cabling you may need 2
either way, there's never going to be a point where the soundo would be required to do double duty with sound and video split.
it's an interesting discussion though.
thanks

Folks be calm, thinging abouth how will the job be done in the near
future should be an active discussion point, or not ? Or what is this
forum good for ? maybe I misunderstood it.
First, i DON NOT MEAN to eleminate the video assist job, and doing it
with my 2 person team ( sorry for " eat the viedeo assist, I did the
mistake to thing that sound peoble could handle black humour ). I mean
the total re orginisize of the job , that mean a 4 man team, changing
from the term " sound and video assist to a " MEDIA Department "
Im doing the worklflow structure for the films anymway, why shouldn´t
I get payed for it ??????? And, will you really say it makes any
differnet if pushing the record button will create a media file, and
not only a sound file ??
And John if it is so that you job is just to wire up, why do you call
you a mixer anymore ? That way of working will be the best point for
re Oraginzation of the structure ..
sometime jobs getting hard, if I really have to mix 4 wired and 2
booms, etc. But, isnt that my job anyway ? if I have get a good
boomer, cable men and then, a video man ? Why should I get payed more
then this guys, if I´m just making an one to one transfer from radios
and boom to audio tracks , for fixing it in the mix ?
You all are speaking will flavour from the super new multi channel HD
recording machines. And what happens ? The guys in the post will now
have tracks seperat, and you are decrated to a bottom pusher.
For this job your Experience is not asked for, and time by time you
will be exchanged by cheaper JUST bottom pusher.
Maybe not so bad to thing about expanding the qualification.
