But then there's the OTHER sound mixer on set...the producer. I had one of these last week. They insisted on a lav and a boom [for -some- of the subjects...go figure]. But then these were agency people who didn't know how to do an interview. Even after explaining to the subjects [which the production company producer explained to the AGENCY directors, yes TWO] that they need to incorporate the question into the answer so we have a subject, most of the answers were something like "Yes, it was something we'd been planning for." or the like.Probably should've been using the boom in the first place (IMNSHO).
Once a bus went by outside. After the [non professional] subject finished his answer I said "You're probably going to want to ask that one again at some point." the [agency] director said "I'm -not- going to make them repeat themselves." Um, ok, so why bother asking the first time?
Later that same day, with a different director, during an answer someone began talking pretty loud off camera [uncontrolled location]. Everyone could hear it. The talking stopped, the subject finished and I said "You're going to want that again." at which point the [agency] director spun around and snapped at me "If there's a PROBLEM you have to let me KNOW!". I said, "Um, I just -did-...."
Now I know why I don't go looking for commercials any more.
