Eddy,
Okay, I'll admit, you made your point more effectively this time.
Maybe it's a difference in ideology, but I still believe that wielding one's purchasing power is ultimately the best way to exhibit some measure of influence over the policies of a company.
I also believe that a company sells more than nuts and bolts (or, in this case "bits and bolts"). In most cases, when you purchase a brand leader, part of what you are paying for is the security you gain from knowing that you are buying a markee product. That's part of what most leading brands are selling, and Avid and Digidesign are no different. It's true with everything from bath soap and peaches, to cars and liquor. Companies employ a variety of marketing techniques toward that end because once a product (or service for that matter) becomes a brand leader, it is worth more in the marketplace.
The fact that ProTools has made their product the de facto standard means that part of what you're paying for is to be using that de facto standard.
BTW, I do know the "power under the hood" of most NLEs. I own a post production studio that does video and film post as well as audio, and have owned (as a matter of fact, still do) probably a half dozen different NLEs including Avid and a couple of Premiere systems. My current primary NLE is a Discreet Edit system and, for the work I do, it blows away Premiere and is faster to cut on than an Avid.
Trust that I, too, have dealt with clients who throw around brand names like Avid and ProTools as if owning them suddenly makes someone more competent. I agree it can be frustrating at times, but if I wish to cater to a client's ignorance, then I'll pay the price. Meanwhile I enjoy the speed and power of Discreet Edit and the speed, agility, and sonic superiority of my SADiE systems.
