Maybe it has to do with growing up in Motown. I would
have thought everybody had heard "ABC" or
"I'll Be There".
I've heard 'I'll Be There' but if I heard the Michael Jackson
version I wan't aware of it. I don't know the sound of his
singing voice. He was never on my mind.
Not knowing anything about Michael Jackson, even to the point of not
knowing the sound of his singing voice, is the same thing as not
knowing a thing about Frank Sinatra or Elvis Presley. You don't even
have to like them, but being familiar with them is basic (very very
basic) cultural literacy. Wasn't it not too long ago (before you guys
got hijacked by the talk radio crowd) conservatives thought cultural
literacy was a good thing?
Think he's trying to do the Red Cloud act, where "Hah, I've never heard
of your cartoon robots, so there!" is meant to give the illusion of
cantankerous rebelliousness...
It generally doesn't *work*, particularly when used by individuals on
this hemisphere.
Particuarly since one generally doesn't BRAG about being out of the
conversational loop, but shaky self-worth seeks any refuge.
