Just saw it and loved it. An operatic, loving, angry, funny, kick
ass, hard cut sparkling gem that's full of surprise and melodrama and
incredible locations and total embracing of cinema. Terrific music
throughout. Acting quite good, especially Benny actor. Nice
MEMPHISTO conjurings. Totally unexpected Powell/Pressburger film
reference that gathers meaning and placement as the film goes on, and
which is completely satisfying. Only fault I found was the very very
very end. That's a quibble. Film starts out very slowly and you
might want to walk out. Don't. This film builds--for a change. Some
spectacular mise-en-scene, just beyond anything one sees in the
different movies out there, and a great example of how well it can
really be done. The story is rivalry between brothers and fathers;
fame, artistic success, babes.
