The photo I see most commonly for "Public Enemies"
ads show Johnny Depp with the Thompson Gun: But
I don't see any cocking lever on the weapon as is visible
at, eg,

That's a commercial M1928 or earlier Thompson (and is
the correct firearm for the time period the movie is set in)
and the cocking handle is the round knob with the slot cut
thru it on top of the receiver.

So has the pick been doctored? Or is it reversed? Or was
this a special version of the Thompson?

That is a WWII M1 Thompson, which was developed in
1942 to simplify production and lower costs for large scale
military issue.
