bigger-budget production than I'd expected ...and it does have its
share of witty scenes and clever cameos. But, as entertainment, the
whole is less that the sum of its smarts. WI's skit-scattered
storyline is barely comprehensible, much less engaging ...and the
spectre it tries to raise seems likely to register more as a cynical
truism than as an urgent wake-up call. Especially as a John Cusack

ranting and one-dimensional. I can't compare it to An American Carol
because I haven't seen the latter and don't plan on it but I can't
imagine War, Inc.'s sledgehammer approach is much more of an
improvement even if the politics are more tolerable. Hilary Duff did
alright but Cusack, for all his cynicism elsewhere, falls into some
serious sentimentality with her character--hey, beneath the foul-
mouthed slutty bitchiness is sensitive acoustic guitar singer-
songwriter. If it wasn't for the stunt casting of Duff I'm not sure
what appeal is here, especially for anyone expecting a full-on Grosse
Pointe Blank sequel. Back to blogging for Salon, John.
