I'm not sure what behavior you're deeming lemming-like.
Let's see, you, nick, Jim Beaver, and Thumper all piled on with what you
thought was the "politically correct" thing to say, even though
ostensibly none of you really believed it.  That's lemming like.
...
I shouldn't (and can't) speak for those guys... but I think that you
err dramatically in imputing p.c. observance to any of
us ...particularly on this topic.  I read (and wrote) nothing I
thought not from the heart.
Scientology, like most religions at the upper-levels of their
organization charts, may well be inhuman.  John Travolta, in the
current connection, isn't.
And if his religion caused him to ignore facts that resulted in his
son's death, are you capable of making any other pronouncement than he's
just a "normal guy" like the rest of us?

I'd say he's an unlucky guy, just like (from time to time) the rest of
us.  Certainly I have no truck with the deliberate ignorance or
suppression of facts.  But the only way I can imagine myself finding
Travolta the Scientologist morally remiss here would be to know that
he clung blindly to his religion's tenets in order to protect whatever
comfort or stature it affords him, personally.  As it is though, I
assume he behaved more-or-less like any desperate father.

I see--you really have no desire to discuss the facts of the case.
That's fine.  Here's the overview of what happened here: some clowns
tried to make fun of Travolta's loss by making fun of his being a
Scientologist.  nick served up some admonishment, reeking of political
correctness.  I realized there was something fishy about the Scientology
aspect, and confirmed my suspicions by reading up on the case.  I posted
my rebuttal, and had you, Thumps and Jim Beaver not only not acknowledge
how valid my point was, you all tried to make the case that Travolta
"may not have been that much of a Scientologist."  In Thumps case I
countered with "Battlefield Earth" as a testament to how committed to L.
Ron the Spiritual Leader Travolta is.  Maybe you missed that post, but I
doubt it.  Now we have the above unfathomable paragraph, which I guess
is your way of saying you lack the cranial capacity to comment
accurately on the facts of the case.

The only positive thing I can say here is that, as an excuse, eight
years of Bush have made the average Joe totally lose sight of his moral
compass, and made putting thought into something rather unfashionable.
Again, all I can say is that you, nick, Jim and Thumps looked like
lemmings going over a cliff with your poorly thought out mock indignation..

Afaik, I keep a fairly strict-but-limited moral compass... which
includes, when it comes to judging other people's, an awareness that
magnetic north isn't absolute.

If you have strong evidence that Travolta withheld conventional
treatment that might well have helped his son, then yeah, I'd probably
be inclined to see it as tragedy compounded by atrocity. Otherwise,
my reaction -- more normally human than lemming-like, imo -- is merely
to feel sympathy for the guy, and to think this the wrong moment to
jab at him. And fwiw, my only "negative" comment in this thread was
my first one... which, if you look it up, I think you'll find was
relatively genteel and impersonal.
