The problem I had with THERE WILL BE BLOOD was that confusion
over the twins.
Having now read some previous threads it appears that most
people think that Paul and Eli were the same person all along.
In that case, one has to explain or understand why Eli tells
his father, when he has him down on the floor, that he believes
Paul went to Daniel and told him about the oil. And at the end
one has to expliain or understand why Daniel tells Eli that Paul
was the chosen one, and he was nothing. In the latter case I
could believe that Daniel is 'going along' with the hoax to the
end, and tormenting Eli with it. But in the former scene, no
one is in the room except the family, and if Paul didn't exist
it's hard to believe that Eli would have referred to him by name
to his father, and say that Paul did what he himself actually did.
I just thought that he was a religious nut that was really of his
rocker.

I brought this up before, but I found it significant when Eli made
three drinks in the bowling alley when it was just he and Daniel there.
Yes, I think he was a nut with a split personality. I must admit
however that I haven't quite finished watching it so I don't see yet
why people think he was twins.

Because they were twins. Paul Dano was originally cast to play
Paul. When the actor playing Eli dropped out for whatever reasons,
Dano stepped into that part as well. At that point, the characters
became identical twins. It's needlessly confusing while you're
watching the film because you do think some kind of weirdness is going
on but it's only a late in the day casting change.
I believed it lent the movie an unnecessary confusion, and it irritated my suspension of disbelief. I was confused for too long. The whole thing was unnecessary and slightly diminished an otherwise pitch-perfect movie.
