I haven't read any of the reviews but I did scan the IMDb comments
section for The Ruins. ?Nice to know that changes were made from the
book because Scott Smith wanted the movie to hold surprises for those
familiar with the novel. ?It might be a rationalization and an excuse
for corporate decisionmaking but the IMDb posters seemed generally
satisfied with the changes.

I didn't like the change in the ending. It pretty much undercuts the
black irony of the Greeks' arrival at the ruins in the final shot. If
Amy got away, the Greeks were hardly doomed. It would be a matter of
mere hours before the Mexican police/army shows up to investigate this
girl's claim of a bunch of Americans and Europeans slaughtered in the
jungle. And a bunch of Mayans with bows and arrows wouldn't be able to
stop that from happening.

True, but this is yet another in the endless series of films where
tourists and researchers and what have you disappear in vast numbers
in the middle of nowhere and no one with any authority ever comes to
look for them The German dude is looking for his brother or whatever,
and at the end of the movie the Greeks are looking for their pal so
it's implied that this is going on all the time.

But in the context of this story, no one ever got away before, either.

In any number of crazy cannibal redneck movies and so on, the
vacationers keep on disappearing and no one does anything.

Yes, but this story was more serious than that dreck. I hardly think the
same storytelling standards are at work with this movie as with, say,
Friday the 13th, Part 27.
