Again, these predictions about the end of DVDs are premature. Silly even. If I have to pay a couple of bucks more to get the nice packaging, and the extra features, I'll do it. I'm not going to start downloading things, and storing them myself, and I don't think anyone else will. We can download music if we want, and I still buy CDs if it's something I really want. This demise is not going to happen.

A few days ago, I saw where Amazon introduced this device called the Kindle, and you can download books and newspapers and magazines to it. It has all sorts of nifty things in it, like a dictionary, which you can use to highlight a word and find the definition in an instant. A great idea. They claim further that the screen is improved so it's not like looking at this computer screen you're looking at right now, which makes reading for long periods uncomfortable. You can flip back and forth between these "pages" and on and on it went. The cost for this thing, which is really just a reshaped computer, is $399, which in my world is a bit steep for a device that is merely an object of curiosity, a technological novelty. You can download books for $9.99, which in my opinion is steep, considering you don't have a hard copy anywhere, in case your hard drive crashes. Here's a link to it:

Anyway, I can't see this thing replacing books. I can see it for a business man who has to read on the go his stock statistics or something. But it ignores the fact that it's fun to browse bookstores. Hell, it's fun to browse DVDs. As bad as they want us to buy into these big rip-offs, I don't think the public overall is going to do it.
