Aja produced and wrote, maintains those "grownup" sensibilities. Now,
that's not to claim that it is, by any means, a resurrected paragon of
the tightly plotted, intellectual horror thriller ...nor is it the
equal of HIGH TENSION, for that matter. But it's rungs above
Hollywood's norm -- notice, e.g., its measured pace of development --
and a likely good time for willing fans. Well recommended.

Went to a matinee showing earlier today. There were a lot of retirees
in the audience and my immediate was, oh for ***'s sake, how
indiscriminating are these people? It's showing so let's go see it.
It's not like they could have seen any advertising or anything. Go
see Lions for Lambs instead so I don't have to sit there and squirm
like I'm watching porn with my parents or something.

It was alright. I haven't read any of the reviews but P2 was for the
most part just a better version of Captivity, a way better version but
there wasn't anything in it to make you *not* wonder why it got a wide
release. Editing-wise, you could make a few cuts and show it on
Lifetime as one of those woman in peril thingies, or add a few gore
shots (and I'm sure it'll happen) and you've got the director's
unrated cut. Like Hostel 2, the climax involves a bad guy foolishly
using the same sexist epithet at the wrong place/wrong time. Poor
old Wes Bentley. He should have had a career but now he's playing the
crazy, weird guy in quasi-slasher flicks. The Elvis fixation seemed
like a foreigner's attempt at colorful character detail.

(Hell, BENJI was a better version of CAPTIVITY...) I'm pathetically
grateful nowadays when a horror-movie doesn't treat me like a teenaged
idiot. So, e.g., when P2's cops actually acted just like real cops
rather than a hokey plot-device, i.e., genial but surly, skeptical,
and superior (and far from super-observant), I almost clapped. Yeah,
I did notice the climactic c-word sounded a little recent... though H2
didn't come immediately to mind. (CAPTIVITY interference, maybe.)
Also, P2's final shot was reminiscent (to me) of HIGH TENSION's... by
addressing an issue or two that might've otherwise lurked with the
audience...

I forgot to mention that last shot, which is really, really good (and
needs to be seen on the big screen instead of DVD a few months/weeks
down the line). If you believe what Takashi Miike said about how all
a movie needs to be good is a good moment, then you definitely get
that with the last shot of P2.
