Fine, but I think the whole way this series has been handled
discourages
some viewers from investing themselves into a new series. One season
and out
I understand. But three seasons (which also equals three years of
paying for
HBO) desereves better from a "premium" channel.

Disagree ...at least with prolonging a show beyond its ability to
excite writers. E.g., I enjoy 'House', and am looking forward to each
episode of next season; but if I hear today that it's scrubbed owing
to creative tap-out, I can dig it.

Seems that Milch, for better or worse, got more excited about 'John
From Cincinnatti'. It's his muse to use or abuse...

I see your point, but HOUSE is different from DEADWOOD in that DEADWOOD
definitely concluded with a broken-off story. A hook had definitely
been baited, and I had bit down hard on it.

More than your typical end-of-season cliffhanger? I loved the show...
but you'd have to remind me. Did someone shoot J.R.?

And there was absolutely no chance of the series ending there. What is your
point?

Sorry if I undershot your expectations of subtlety... but *is* my
point. To repeat: I don't remember an exceptionally momentous
'Deadwood' cliffhanger ...certainly not of J.R.-magnitude. Not a
matter of wrong, right, or consensus... I'd simply have to be
reminded, as I said.

You know, at a certain point the proof is in the pudding--a lot of people
are pissed at the way this way down (please go review the archives of the
Deadwood NG if you need verification). It is not a stretch to suggest that
many of these people will not want to get burned twice.

You can be stubbornly contrarian on the point if you like, but in this world
people who take your money are often perceived to owe you something in
return. And the "something", in this case, was something more than the
haphazard way in which this was handled (and if you dispute the "haphazard"
characterization, please consult with Mr. Beaver). And please--spare me the
romantic notions about Milch's "muse". Once this series was three seasons
down the tracks, many people behind the camera had invested themselves in
the series, and were, in large part, responsible for what had been created
to date. The Milch-as-"auteur" theory is a bit of a stretch, I think.

Well, I can't speak for Jim Beaver... but his praise for Milch (though
hardly disinterested) has been lavish, iirc. Meanwhile, I have no
"romantic notions" about Milch's muse... just a priority for giving
writers as much slack as possible, for my own selfish reasons w/r/t
what *I* enjoy most.

Nobody has denied the right of Milch and HBO to do what they did.

Nobody has said anybody has denied it.

All that
has been contended that it has left a sour taste in the mouths of many
viewers who, rightly or wrongly, expected more out of a premium channel
(wrongly, obviously). How hard is that to understand (and without resorting
to inapt analogies)?

'House' and 'Dallas' are "inapt analogies"? Meanwhile, the sort of
infraction you seem to be claiming is one I'd find intolerable from
*any* major channel, whether premium or lo-carb. Again, though, I'd
need reminding of what shoe 'Deadwood' left undropped, in order to
better my opinion about the widespread outrage...
