I absolutely LOVE responses like this. I appreciate the value of my own
average intelligence.
Obviously not having seen it yet, I caught one review which pointed out
how, among other depictions of How Much Better Other Countries Are Than
Our Smug White America[TM, copyright 1994, Dog Eat Dog Productions],
Moore tries to show UK's National Health Service as a model of *foreign*
state-sponsored health care...
--Um...excuse me? 0_o??
I'd never set foot in the UK, but had grown up hearing all about the NHS
twenty years earlier, as the *** of every 70's Brit-comic joke from
Benny Hill^1 to "Yes, Minister"--And had the image firmly planted in my
mind that even Brits considered the Service a humiliating low-rent
band-aid only fit for the lowest-middle classes who couldn't afford any
-real- medicine.
It's the psychiatric mark of Narcisisstic Personality Disorder for the
desire to pick straw-man "Society's delusions" fight to boost personal
self-esteem--
Not sure whether Moore reached that textbook stage two or three films
ago, or just on his last TV episode, but when you start believing your
own windmill-tiltings in spite of evidence, that's when the needle
starts slipping into the red zone.
Wow, this is just -- I have no words. You speak of "believing your
own windmill-tiltings in spite of evidence", and the evidence you
offer is Benny Hill, from the 70's no less. Why don't you ask real
Britons from today whether they would prefer their system (not
perfect, but none is), or yours.
Actually, my HMO is. Leave it alone. And I also pay $$ into the USAs
"single-payer" system called Medicare.
My boss's mother had to have knee-replacement surgery. The waitinglist
for Kaiser (an evil HMO): 3 months. Her brother in Sweden required the
same surgery. His waiting period: 1.5 years (all the while he wasn't
able to work so the government was also paying him money to wait for
them to help him out medically). The ironic thing is that Swedes love
their way of life, but they also complain about their outrageously
high taxes, and the ways they can get around them working under the
table (just like in the US... sounds familiar). They also have to
purchase supplemental health insurance if they want anything of decent
quality.
So, my question is, under the single-payer systems that a lot of
people in the US want to emulate, the people receive guaranteed care,
but it is so sub-standard that they not only complain about it, but
they also have to purchase supplemental care with money out of their
own pockets (one wonders if it is tax-deductible, like it is in the
US). Gee... this sounds like the same system we have here, the
difference being I'm not _forced_ into it.
The bottom line that no one seems to talk about is what are we going
to do with care for non-citizens? There will be an unprecedented flood
of humanity across the borders of the US if "single-payer" becomes a
reality. It will become a financial, social and political nightmare
almost over night (really, who could blame them for coming here?).
