The Stephen King-based scary movie 1408 received relatively excellent
early reviews from both press and public. Thus, it's with heavy heart
that I register my disappointment ...don't shoot the messenger. This
is self-conscious Sunday School horror that left me occasionally
startled, but never tense. In fairness, the fault's not the movie's
PG-13 proscriptions afaics, but rather that storyteller King never
relinquishes center stage... and with merely mediocre material, to
boot. Fie. Not recommended.

What did you mean, "King never relinquishes center stage"? Does he make himself some sort of hokey presence in it?
