A couple of days ago I went to the local Movie Gallery, specifically to
hunt up the last Christian Bale movie, HARSH TIMES. Bale is one of the
more interesting actors around (like Gary Oldman), and I'll immediately
toss my interest in with whatever he's doing. Movie Gallery didn't have
it. I asked the manager -- a woman in her late thirties -- and she
hadn't even heard of it. Now, I know this wasn't a blockbuster, but it
was a mainstream release, with trailers and all that stuff. She asked
her clerk. Her clerk reminded the manager who Bale was, and it came to
her then that, yes, she had seen trailers for that movie, but it wasn't
released yet on DVD. I suspected that she really didn't know what she
was talking about, so I went home and checked Amazon for the release
details. She was wrong. It had been released back in March.

I went back to Movie Gallery to make sure that we hadn't all missed it
on the shelf. It wasn't there. We went on to Blockbuster. Now here's
the clincher. Blockbuster had the movie, but the box bragged that HARSH
TIMES was a BLOCKBUSTER exclusive. I couldn't believe what I was
reading. How can Blockbuster prevent another chain from procuring a
release? It seemed to me that it would be considered an unfair business
practice.

It is, but it's the Weinsteins' unfair idea. (Ie., their deal to give
Blockbuster "exclusive" rights to every Weinstein/Genius production, in
case we wanted to rush out for our copies of "Bobby" and "Teenage Mutant
Ninja Turtles".)
How long? Their plan is, pretty much just until that mean ol' Netflix
comes crawling to Blockbuster and begs to be released from this horrible
boycott that's crippled their business...Might as well settle in for a
while.

But Netflix has the Weinstein titles. Wal-Mart carries them too (if
you have your heart set on buying that copy of Black Christmas or
Bobby), so the "exclusivity" Blockbuster has must be limited in its
intent to sticking it to Hollywood and Movie Gallery and brick and
mortar rental places in general.

Blockbuster's main line of assault against Netflix is in its online
rental service, with the concentration on the idea of returning your
DVDs to the store and getting a free DVD rental on top of your mail
rental. I don't know how well this work but I've read things by
customers saying you're putting yourself at the mercy of the
Blockbuster you returned your DVD to as to when it actually gets put
in the mail and sent on.- Hide quoted text -

not so at all. When I return films to the store they "report" them
returned and they beging sending me more. I have a plan for no more
than 3 out at a time but I sometimes have 6 out at no extra cost
because the warehouse considerd the ones "out" until they get then yet
the know they are in the store or in transit so they send more

I have a different problem, my store is closing. I suspect BB is
cutting back now on stores because this one is always very busy. I
will now be shifting to Netflix. Netflix sends you films in the order
of your queue, with BB that doesnt happen.
I have had films "available" for months while everything I add below
it gets sent to me. Also Netflix has a much wider library of titles.
