Seems like a no-brainer to say that, if you liked THE STRAIGHT STORY,
you'll like THE WORLD'S FASTEST INDIAN... as I did and did. INDIAN's
director, Roger Donaldson, has a nice filmography (especially if, like
me, you thought DANTE'S PEAK was a rip-snorter). But a puzzle for me
has been why I so enjoyed his THIRTEEN DAYS... and INDIAN provides a
clue: Donaldson's restrains the tone of his historical subject within
the bounds of believability, never letting the scenes or persona take
on screen-mythic dimensions or coloration. Thus, you're able to hang
in there and, with luck, actually feel some witness-like connection to
the events. I expected that, at just over 2 hours running time, even
Anthony Hopkins would have me wishing his Indian were faster... but,
surprisingly, I never checked my watch. A quality movie by quality
talent. Recommended.
And you don't have to be a motorcycle enthusiast to enjoy it.
