Re: IMAX on DVD

True IMAX format is roughly 4:3, I think... which is "fullscreen" tv.

That's what I said. It makes heavy use of wide-angle cinematography,
but it's not widescreen.

So, the ideal home-rendition would be on a high-def standard-aspect tv
...which I doubt you or anyone is likely ever to have, btw.

I didn't say anything about the ideal home rendition. I said -if- one
has something more than standard TV. In my case I have a 27 inch
nearly flat 4x3 screen that I watch with eyes a little over four feet
from it, and the audio fed through a very good stereo amplifier and
speaker system. I call it 'simulated' home theater. I always watch
widescreen DVD except in the rare instances when I have to settle
for fullscreen. In the case of IMAX, which is fullscreen, as both I
and
you said, it's a very large home image with great sound, and the
flying effects are very impressive, because of the wide angle
photography. Without the wide angle, a large screen would not be
important, in fact it would be a detriment. Whenever I have to watch
ordinary fullscreen, I move back farther from the monitor.

Meanwhile,
it seems to me that standard-resolution tv ought to derive effectively
zero benefit from the giant IMAX negative.

Again, I wasn't talking about resolution, except in an IMAX theater.

So, if I were as impressed
with the dvd's resolution as you seem to be, I'd explore the
possibility of a placebo effect.

Again, I wasn't talking about resolution. And God do I hate being
talked down to when I know as much about the subject as the
person who is doing the talking down.

For a fun and often eyepopping
standard-res comparator, you might want to try AMERICA'S HEART AND
SOUL... (whose political viewpoint's rather conservative, so steel
yourself...)

No thanks.
