Though coaxed to CASANOVA by theater-schedule, I knew I was pretty safe,
because Lasse Hallstrom is about as reliable a director as there is for
making movies I find easily watchable (...yes, all of them). And Heath
Ledger's counter-Brokeback movie is no exception. It's funny,
well-staffed, and (with the exception of one leaky green-screen
sequence) has appealing production values throughout. And its greatest
significance is its relentless insignificance. I remain surprised that
someone with Hallstrom's talent wouldn't long to crank out a magnum opus
somewhere. Anyway... CASANOVA's recommended, of course. (Would've been
even better if the damned trailers hadn't cherry-picked the dialogue...)
Other things that should be mentioned are the great baroque back-
ground music and the Venice settings, the whole movie having
been filmed there. The DVD has nice, though strangely short,
features on Venice, the costumes, and of course the making of.
(And I still wonder about the coincident timing of Ledger's role as the
World's Greatest Heterosexual...)
