I think maybe the Leno and Letterman style explosion of jokes
may have made more difference than the right-wing pundits.
Don't the mainstream talk-show hosts have a much bigger
audience than the right-wing personalities?

To be honest, I never understood why Brokeback Mountain became such a
media event (and I liked the film a lot). The gay western angle was
always a bit of a deception since most of the people calling it that
probably didn't realize it begins in 1963 and ends in 1978 and doesn't
have a whole lot of cowboying in it.

The right wing attacks on Hollywood were aggresively dishonest. One Fox
anchor said she loved Brokeback Mountain but when you compare the money
it made against Star Wars you see how out of touch with America
Hollywood is, a statement that has so many holes in it, it's
staggering, but these people said these things time after time after
time and they were never called on it.

I think Brokeback Mountain has done more harm than good in terms of
American society since people who were supportive of gays weren't made
any *more* supportive because of BBM but homophobes and queerbashers
saw its release as a license to go all out with dreary, unfunny gay
jokes and insults, the hatefulness and fear being masked by the lame-o
attempts to be funny.
