Re: First Four Minutes of Chicken Little

I have tried to laugh at it. I saw a commercial for it last night during 'Lost'. Unfortunately, while it looks very cute, I didn't find it all that funny. It seemed to be striving very hard for that hip, sardonic 'Emperor's New Groove' type of humor, but I just didn't think it was all that humorous

(Well, Dindal's "Emperor's New Groove" *was* funny...
But--crucial distinction here--that was way back when he was making an animated movie that DIDN'T look like every single dang else's one.)

Oh, I love ENG! It's great. But I think part of the success of its humor was its whole go-for-broke attitude-I think at some point the writers said "What the heck, let's just put this in there and not worry about it!" It was a very fresh, slightly sarcastic approach that worked.

In CL, it doesn't, because the stuff they think is funny really isn't, at least to me. But we're obviously meant to be in hysterics.

It's pretty clear where Disney's going with this:

They started out with "It's an epic comedy about alien invasion!"
Which soon gave way to "Okay, so it's a wacky Dreamworks wannabe, but the character's cute!--Hey, check out the dancinc scene we thought up!"
And now, judging from latest ads, "Okay, so: One of the characters tries putting a dollar bill in a machine, and--get this--it WON'T TAKE IT!...I mean, that's comedy!"

Exactly!! When I saw that, I thought, "Well, that might have been funny when those machines were first introduced, what, 15 years ago?" That whole bit has been done to death.

I don't know if there's a *fourth* stage of studio "giving up in despair", but it usually involves begging.

I think Disney may be about to find out that the animation style alone will not save a poor film. It's always been about the story, not whether it's 2D or 3D animation.
