RYE - John E. "Johnny" Hayes, 75, husband of Eleanor A. (Yeaton) Hayes, of
15 Foster Lane, Rye, died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2007, at Portsmouth Regional
Hospital.
He was born on Sept.11, 1932, in Kittery, Maine, the son of Timothy J. and
Pauline L. (Swain) Hayes.

Johnny was a graduate of Traip Academy, Class of 1951. He served in the
United States Army during the Korean War from 1953 to 1955. During his time
in the military he was a musician with the 39th Regimental Band 9th Division
and the 7th Army Special Services in Germany.

Other than his wife of 51 years, survivors include two daughters, Kathryn
Humes of Bath, Maine, and Lori MacGinnis and her husband, John, of Eliot,
Maine; five grandchildren, Eric Richard Humes of Topsham, Maine, Angela
Kathryn Humes of Gorham, Maine, Caitlin McKenna of Glasgow, Scotland, and
Joseph MacGinnis and Patrick MacGinnis of Eliot, Maine; two
great-grandchildren, Lillian Rose Richardson and Megan Nicole Humes, both of
Gorham, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.

WE REMEMBER: He was employed as a welder at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard
from 1960 to 1991. After retiring, he worked at Seacoast Mental Health as a
driver for 10 years.
For many years, Johnny taught drums for private students and three local
drum and bugle corps, "Golden Eagles," "The Rangers" of Portsmouth and "The
Mariners" of Rollinsford.
Johnny played all of his life with several musical groups in the local area
including the "Memorial Bridge Allstars" and most recently "Good Mem'ries
Big Band."

He was a member of the Middle Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth, St.
John's Lodge No. 1 F&AM of Portsmouth, Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of
Portsmouth and Dover, N.H. Consistory 32nd degree of Nashua, and was a
member of Emerson Hovey Post # 168 VFW of Portsmouth.

SERVICES: Visiting hours will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday at the J.
Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, with
Masonic services at 2:45 p.m. by St. John's Lodge No. 1 F&AM.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at the Middle Street
Baptist Church, 18 Court St., Portsmouth.
Interment will be held in Central Cemetery, Rye.
Family flowers only.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Middle Street Baptist Church
Elevator Fund.
