What about the new slogan - "Marching Music's Major League," I
believe.
They've been strong advocates of "building a brand" since their
inception in '72.
Kids who marched before I aged out, in 1979, identified strongly with
their corps. Sometimes they identified strongly with other corps,
depending on personal experiences and preferences. Did anyone identify
strongly with a championship or a circuit or a sponsor or anything
like that? I never heard "oh, I marched in AL" or "I was a World Open"
competitor, even though there were once several championships every
bit as prestigious & desirable as DCI's. Only Mike D. has ever uttered
something like, "Oh, I was Garden State Circuit," for although I
participated in a Southern California circuit, that was VK I was
doing, not some circuit. <Ew!>
Nowdays, do kids identify more with "Oh, I marched in DCI," or do they
still relate first to their corps? And if the latter, what the hell is
DCI wasting its time developing brand for? They've been at it 25
years! No wonder they can't get anyone to watch their damn
informercials: they're sellin' the wrong product!
As for their current motto, since they're neither "Marching's Major
League" nor "Music's Major League," how does combining the two make
this slogan anything other than Howdy-style gratuitous self-flattery?
