It was a hacksaw job on an Indiana Marching Band Mellophone - He later brought it to Conn and they made the mellophoniums used by the "hell raisers" in his orchestra

Jazzer Don Elliot had a strangely-contorted version built, well before Kenton "invented" his.
But the Guy Lombardo Orchestra had a bellfront version even before that, his brother Carmen played it on Dixieland numbers!
