Dexter Krogman. Born Dec. 1, 1920 in Crookston, MN, passed away in his 82nd year at
his home in Richfield, MN, on Oct. 16, 2003. Dexter spent his early years in
Crookston, then moved to Chicago, IL when he was 19 years old.
He found work in the foundry of the Sloan Valve Company and was establishing himself
as a time study engineer when he was drafted into military service. He spent 3 years
in the U.S. Navy, serving about various landing craft in the Pacific Theatre.
Upon his discharge in 1946, he returned to Chicago. Unable to find work, he
relocated to St. Paul, MN, where he was hired by the Straus Knitting Mill. From
there he advanced his career as an Industrial Engineer in the garment industry.
In 1948 he met his first wife, Violanda Pizzuti. They had four children. Dexter
stayed with Straus until the mid 1960's, then moved to a position at the Munsingwear
Company in Minneapolis.
He was Director of the St. Paul Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps 1966-1967.
In 1967 his wife died. In 1969 he remarried to Vera Kershaw.
In 1970 Dexter changed jobs again, this time moving himself, Vera and his two
youngest daughters to Winston-Salem, NC, where he took up employment with the Hanes
Company. After two years he was rehired by Straus and returned to Minnesota where he
and his family settled in Richfield.
He retired from Straus in 1985, but did not retire from life. It was at this time
where his truly creative and fun side began to show. Dexter and Vera had always
dreamed of traveling the world, and so they did. He and Vera found work with the
International Executive Service Corp. Dexter was hired as a private consultant for
newly created garment businesses in developing countries. His work took him and Vera
to Chile, Hungary, Peru and Zimbabwe, South Africa. The jobs extended up to three
months at a time, where he and his wife took the time to follow their dream and see
many other places on the globe. Not a couple of homebodies by any means, if the two
were not in Europe, Asia or Africa, they would spend their time traveling the roads
of North America, camping along the way.
Dexter was an avid handyman, carpenter, builder and gardener. When he wasn't on the
road or in his shop, he could be found working in his garden or analyzing
handwriting.
He is survived by his wife, Vera; children, Dawn (Steven) D'hanson, Dane Krogman,
Debby (Doug) Thomas, Dee Kerr, Cynthia (Marty) Hirsch and James Kershaw; 8
grandchildren, 3 great- grandchildren, and sister, Delight. "My dear Bomo and Papa -
You'll be in our hearts forever."
According to his wishes, he will be cremated and there will be no public memorial or
funeral service. Memorials preferred to donor's choice. Cremation Society of MN Mpls
