Thanks Travers. I should say that the Doso has a grave mark over the
first "o". With the shinagawa I would expect it to be a shrine
of some type or a holy object. I think the final word would be a
compound like great man but I have just pecked around the edges of
Japanese so to speak. I have read a great deal about Japan though and
picked up a bit of information. I wish I could show you the original
kanji.

Douso (n) common ancestor

Using more clues, I have found that daijin can be used for "grand shrine"
as in "daijinguu" for The Grand Shrine at Ise. Not sure what the "-rei"
at the end is.


Looking in my Random House, Daijin is listed as cabinet member, and one
definition of rei is soul, so maybe it means a monument or memorial marker
for the soul of an important government member?? I can't reproduce the
kanji from the dictionary, but based on the Japanese love of puns, esp. in
dual meanings for the apparent romaji word (IIRC tho different kanji) I
would guess that the kanji would be necessary to see for a Japanese fluent
individual to get true meaning. My 2 cents. ^_^
