So, Torchwood now is ... Gwen. And Rhys, seemingly, despite his
protestation to the contrary. Wonder if Andy survived
Probably just Gwen. Rhys is handy to give Gwen something normal to
fight for, so lots of scenes where he changes nappies while she rushes
off to save the world. Maybe Andy could join Torchwood (he was
immobilised, not killed), but he's more useful as the guy who can
check police computers for intel than as a fulltime member.
Yes, my feeling was that Andy should stay in the police, as he works
best as 'their guy in the force'. That leaves as the obvious
contenders the surviving characters who, at one point or another in
this serial, have effectively worked as part of Torchwood: Gwen, Rhys,
Lois, Johnson and Dekker. Dekker seems the most useful choice - with
Torchwood's Hub gone, someone who's more-or-less up to date on
Torchwood tech from hacking it would come in handy, and they could use
a techie. Still not convinced he'd grow on me as part of the team,
though. Lois and Johnson are just boring.
Lois is
doubtful as a member, though there's always that very strange man at
T2 in Glasgow. Maybe T4 will re-appear, but that's more likely to be
an episode plot than a way to find new members.
Everyone expected a reset button. Instead, we get a re-boot. Expect a
recruitment episode when it returns.
I said from the start (as in the announcement of the 5-part serial)
that I expected it to be a relaunch of the show. However, what I was
expecting was a new pilot - this wasn't so much a reboot as a way of
clearing the deck so that they could do a reboot next year.
