I am holding by breath on this one. The real question for me is
how will the new doctor be played? Will he play the role with
the wisdom of a 900 year old God, or with the swash and buckle
of another pantomime hero?
Will the companion be in awe of the doctor, or his equal? Will
there be much difference between them, so that the stories can
then make the most of that mismatch of 'chemistry', or will
they be like two peas from the same pod, with that 'ah' factor,
leaving little room for that natural dynamic? A key ingredient
of the original series.
The story needs one person to ask the obvious questions, and
the other to supply the not so obvious answers. Then there's
our relationship to knowledge and wisdom. The way programs
like these tea time dramas define our attitude to the source
of information and authority. If these precocious whipper
snappers are seen to have all the answers, what does that say
about the figures we invest with authority. In the old day,
the doctor, was necessarily older. Age equated to wisdom, and
wisdom was something we made space for.
What age do real doctors qualify to start practicing? 27 is it? Isn't that about the same age that Matt Smith is now?
I guess these days you can't trust the old for answers, or
so one could read as the subtext. Chasing the obvious demographic
with the obvious formula, meaning the relatively inexperience
command the attention and judgment of the equally inexperience.
I'm not arguing just for older, but wiser.
Aren't princes William and Harry either the same age or younger than Matt Smith but still officers in the British army commanding their own men? (Yer, ok, more like commanding boys but the point still stands.)
Still let's wait and see. The stories are already written,
waiting for the most profitable market, it just remains
to be seen how our new actors approached their characters..
I just hope they don't marginalize the audience, by aiming
to narrowly for what sells.
Just as long as it's not written as a soap opera all about the chavey assistant and the Doctor is not made into a glorified tour guide come holiday rep then it should be ok.
Steve Moffat is a infinitely better writer than RTD and knows how to do proper characterisation and relationships and doesn't resort to crude stereotypes.
I'm looking forward to Matt Smith and Karen Gillan.
I wonder if there's going to be a new TARDIS set as well?
