progress. Of course. And thank the gods for that.
I'm old with the perspective of someone who was raised on and with the
civil rights struggle, and I am glad I saw this election in my lifetime.
But I am so damned upset about Prop.8 passing in California. Damn. Damn.
Damn.
Bloody stupid timing too - the question is, will Obama repeal bans on
gay marriage at a federal level?

It was part of his platform that he would not. I think,
Then again, it was part of his platform that he'd double spending for
energy research, and that ain't gonna happen. It was part of his
platform that he'd start pulling troops out of Iraq immediately - but
that's apparently not what he's been telling the Iraqis (assuring the
Iraqi PM that he wouldn't take any decision 'rashly' or without
consultation), so maybe that's not gonna happen either; and if it
doesn't, where will he get the extra troops he's pledged to commit to
Afghanistan? It was part of his platform that he'd readily invade
Pakistan to combat militants there, and we can hope that ain't gonna
happen. During the campaign itself, his stance on science spending
shifted (not sure which aspect - maybe NASA); after McCain offered
extra financial support for whatever it was, Obama hastily backtracked
on his commitment to cut spending on it. If his platform wasn't the
same from one week to the next while he was running, what chance his
policies in a month's time will bear much relation to what he was
saying last week?
The morale of the story being: don't take politicians at their word.
And with a near-complete Democrat majority, this isn't part of his
manifesto he'd have difficulty backtracking on. Particularly given his
newfound status as the walking manifestation of American civil rights
(be it deserved or not), not taking action on gay rights would be a
letdown.
