A weird thing happened this week. I started having an argument with
Aggy, for no good reason whatsoever, about a rather uninteresting
 topic.

I've been hooked by him on many such occasions - I thought you'd avoided
it for so long by being one of the people sensible enough to ignore him.

Then I had an epiphany, or moment of clarity if you will;
 [...]

I recently heard Paul Cornell speak about how he found religion -
apparently, it started during an online argument with some complete
idiot or other, when he realised "I could just forget about it and move
on".

I don't see the connection. What does moving on have to do with
 finding religion?

Trying not to misrepresent him here, as I can't identify with the
experience myself... I gather he had an indescribable feeling of
well-being at the moment he decided to stop bickering and forgive the
other participant.

Well, naturally he would, but why would he consider that to be proof
of God? Sounds screwy to me.

Oh, for goodness' sake. It's just an *expression*, like saying "I've
seen the light" (which means the same thing), which isn't usually used
in the religious context that inspired it. I don't think Mike was
expecting to be taken literally.

I was asking in regards to Paul Cornell, not Mike. Why would Cornell
equate leaving usenet with finding religion?

I don't think it was specifically about leaving usenet, it was about
forgiving the other guy (even when that other guy was still obviously
wrong). It was on the BBC Radio Wales program "All Things Considered",
but doesn't seem to be in the archive any more:
