So what on earth has happened to Robin Hood. I thought it was supposed
to
be coming back with a third series according to the announcement at the
end of the last episode?

Anyway, on with the review. Merlin series 1 episode one, featuring Eve
Myles who transforms herself into a gerbil, no wait, that didn't
require
any special effects, she already looks like a gerbil, and staring Anton
du Bec, doing a mad dash from the studios of Hole in the Wall, where he
did some penetration involving Zoe Salmon, and straight to the studios
of
Strictly Come Dancing where it wasn't his turn yet, and fresh into the
guise of Merlin, complete with long chin and sticking out ears. Along
for
the ride were Victor Meldrew, Rupert Giles, and The Elephant Man.

Was it historically accurate I hear you ask? No it blooming well
wasn't.
Uther Pendragon was supposed to have reigned in about 500 AD whereas
Merlin was set in a cross between 1200 and 1500. Ah, so that's what
they
meant by Robin Hood coming back. Just call me Merlin.

Anyway the dialogue was utterly atrocious. Robin Hood was bad enough,
but
this is the pits. Garbage, total garbage. The exchanges between Anton
du
Bec and the guy who played the young Arthur, were abysmal. Vicor
Meldrew
struggled to sound convincing with the lines he was given, but his
appearance did not look convincing at all. His face looked like it was
made of plastic and so did Eve Myles even after her transformation. Why
with the fat make-up on their faces?

Rupert Giles managed to make something reasonable out of the dialogue
playing it Shakespearian, but even then the dialogue was so bad that he
had to do some of it natural as if he was still in The Invisibles. The
Elephant Man sounded out of place on the opening narration, but better
at
the end.

Anton du Bec though was rubbish. He was obviously miscast and should
stick to dancing or jumping thought holes in walls which is what he's
good at.

Oh, and if that isn't bad enough, Gwenivir has been turned into a
serving
maid, and she's black.

At least Eve Myles put on a decent performance, dropping her Welsh
accent
for once, but she replaced it with some heathen made up language,
unless,
it was Welsh?

Anyway the story was rubbish. What story. It's not even the standard
king
Arthur and Merlin story, but a complete deviation from it. Arthur is
not
even supposed to have been born until after Uther got him to enchant
Igrene and marry him, and Uther doesn't even become king of Britain
until
after he's met Merlin and allied himself with him. They've even left
out
the part were Vortigern is told to look for a youth who never had a
father, which is how Merlin was discovered in the first place.

All that Merlin does is move things. He's already got his powers and
knows how to use them so that's another possible story line they've
divested themselves of. He's been made into Arthur body servant,
whereas
in the literature he's supposed to be equal in power to Uther.

Will there be a series 2 I wonder. Let's see if series 1 improves
first.

5/10

Shoddy dialogue that could have been better written by school kids and
inappropriate to the period its set, completely divergent from the
standard accounts of Merlin, Uther, Gwenivir and King Arthur, set in
the
wrong historical period, set in a PC loony society which never existed
and with people who don't think the way people of the time of king
Arthur, or even of the middle ages should think or speak based extant
personal letters and literature that was written at the time.

It's a shitty Saturday night populist TV programme! What the *** do you
expect?

Oh you mean like Doctor Who.

FOOL!

Stick to those brilliant blockbusters, eh?

Well at least they have better dialogue than this Merlin travesty.

Although - since you never buy anything - no doubt you'll be

You mean I don't buy rubbish.

torrent-downloading "Heroes" on Monday and bitching about that, too...

No. It's on the BBC later in the year.

I thought it was on the BBC earlier in the year - have they started
season 3? Will anyone bother? I've had half of season 2 on the Sky Box
since it first aired and still can't be bothered to watch it.

Any news on when the rest of BSG is airing?

Phil

9th of January in the US, according to
http://epguides.com/BattlestarGalactica/.

I'm guessing, probably soon after on SciFi Channel?
