It's not dreadful, just ... soporific. Unspeakably boring. Fear Her is
much worse an episode, but it's (regrettably) more memorable. I've
literally found myself watching 42 and forgetting which episode it is
*while watching*.
Human Nature is one of those episodes that everybody seems to like and
I can't figure out why. I was pretty bored, and I thought the ending
was very idiotic. I rate this episode very badly, along with 42.
Not because it is campy or idiotic like Fear Her or Love & Monsters,
but just because it is boring.
With a criticism like that, it's difficult to articulate what the high
points were, as you're not really articulating where you found it
boring.
First and above all, Human Nature has *tons* of atmosphere. I grew up
reading things like Just William, set in an idyllic fantasy England of
the early 20th Century, and Billy Bunter, set in a stereotypical
public school, watching Dads Army (set in an idyllic fantasy England
set in the 1940s which had basically not changed much from the earlier
one), reading John Wyndham and watching '50s B-movies. I'm a WWI buff
to boot. There isn't a one of those influences that Human Nature
doesn't evoke, and do so brilliantly - it's Invasion of the
Bodysnatchers! With triffids! Well, okay, scarecrows, but they're
played much the same as in the monster film version of Triffids, plus
there are green meteors (well, one green meteor). And green beams!
Not to mention a creepy kid who could have walked out of the Midwich
Cuckoos. Honestly, if you're going to make a story by stitching
together
every classic sci-fi cliche and still produce an original product, you
can't do better than this.
