Actually, we use them both over here. Every kindergarten child knows
both words (at least all the young children I know do).
I think finding out when "fall" became interchangeable as the name to the
season here would be interesting...
Although it's rarely used here, I think most people know what Fall means. I
always use the phrase "Spring forward, Fall back" to help remind me whether
the clocks go forward or backwards an hour.
