Yes, but why would anyone want to read Usenet newsgroups without plain
text or a fixed width font? Most newsreaders are not defaulted that way.

I use Outlook Express which defaults to Times New Roman (which is not fixed
width). I can personalise it to use the font of my choice (fixed width or
otherwise). I'm not sure what you mean when you say "plain text".

After he pointed out that the question marks I saw were not in the
original, I realised that it was, in part, a charset issue. My client
prints a question mark whenever it encounters a character it doesn't
recognise. The original post used "charset=utf-8", with a couple of
characters that don't map perfectly into the 8859-1 that my client uses.
(Still doesn't explain the bizarre mismatched line widths on the right.)
