Rubbish. The English language is a living language. It has changed. It has
Bollocks. The English language is an impure hybrid of French, German, Latin
and Greek. It changed over the years depending on weather the Normans or the
Saxons were in the ascendancy and reached its modern form by about 1500 BC.
The language spoken today is not the same as that spoken in 1500BC. (Or
1500AD, which is what you probably meant to write.) It has changed
noticeably, even if a modern English reader can, with a little effort,
understand texts from that time.
Then there's the Welsh who have their own language which is what everyone
spoke in England before the foreigners moved in. Greek did not have these
disadvantages since it is a pure homogenous language with almost zero
foreign influences since Mycenaean times
Sorry, why did Korais create Katharevousa in the first place? I
thought it was because the demotic Greek spoken _two centuries ago_ was
the result of many foreign influences. Are you telling me that Kath.
was completely successful, the population all started speaking it and
all those foreign influences were chucked out?
evolved. Just like any other living language. King James version of the
Bible uses words and grammar that most modern readers would not
understand. It uses many words that people today do not, and would not,
use. We use "you", not "thou". Replenish means to "refill". It used to
mean "fill".
Poppy***. Anyone who has been to church or school assembly knows what thou
and replenish mean.
In the case of "thou", they would still never use it. And in the case
of "replenish", not only would they rarely use it, but they'd understand
it to mean something different to its earlier meaning.
Here is a passage from the 1611 printing of the King James Bible: "And it
came to passe in the time of her trauaile, that beholde, twinnes were in
her wombe. And it came to passe when she trauailed, that the one put out
his hand, and the midwife tooke and bound vpon his hand a skarlet threed,
saying, This came out first. And it came to passe as he drewe back his
hand, that behold, his brother came out: and she said, How hast thou
broken foorth? this breach bee vpon thee: Therefore his name was called
Pharez. And afterward came out his brother that had the skarlet threed
vpon his hand, and his name was called Zarah."
And your problem with reading this is what? Its easier to read and
understand than the modern Scouse or Geordie dialects. Its the way that the
common working class still speak today up norf.
Which bits of Liverpool and Newcastle have you been visiting?!
When I lived near Hull, I never heard anybody speaking in the above
manner. (I'm not working class, but I do have a working pair of ears.)
And the written language stays exactly the same across the country -
it's only the pronunciations and the peculiar informal turns of phrase
that vary.
Oh, and "up north" we can pronounce "th". It's a particular London
accent that stereotypically changes it to "f".

The Glyn of Kennington - remove caps when replying
"it's" - abbrevation for "it is"
"its" - belonging to it, cf. "his", "hers"
