You obviously judge all Christians by the worst excesses of the
fundamentalists from your own country. What makes you think
all (or even most) Christians think this way?
Yes, I'm waiting for the answer on this one. Elvis seems to think all
Christians are waiting around for Armagedddon, all think God appointed
George Bush president, all think God created the earth with dinosaur
bones in situ, they all send away for a televangelist's prayer hanky,
all want to see prayer in the public school, all want a Muslims head on
a pike near their dinner table, etc. etc. The man is seriously ill
equipped for an intelligent discussion on the issue. He's as narrow
minded in his beliefs as he claims Christians are in theirs. Plus he
comes to the table with almost zero knowledge of scripture or science.
Zero knowledge of science? Ha.
And notice how he wants me to get trapped into playing quote the scriptures
with him as though they have some provable validity.
If you are wanting to discuss what Christians believe, then the scriptures
are where to start looking.
I've seen it. It's rubbish.
so actually if you are trying to make points about what they believe, then
quoting scripture is the way to back up anything you might say.
No, it's a trap because when you point out the heinous things that STILL are
in books like Leviticus which they insist are the words of their god they
switch tactics and start that bit about the Devil quoting scriptures for his
own ends.
Most Christians seriously object to the extremist versions which end up
preaching hatred and intolerance because, well, it doesn't reflect scripture
at all.
Funny how no one wants to excise all the bits that tell you how it's
permissible to pimp out their women, kill people they capture in battle or
enslave them and so on.
The 10 commandments are the bit that tells you how to live your life if
you look in the old testament.
They are pretty damn unambiguous.
Don't kill,
Don't steal
Honour your parents
Don't covet your neighbours belongings.
Yes the bible tells stories about people doing all kinds of nasty ***,
but when you come down to it, the advice on how to live your life is in
fact extremely positive.
You are cherry picking to make it look bad. I am pointing out which
bits are actually supposed to tell us how to live our lives. And I
haven't even touched the words Jesus had to say on the subject.
These include
Turn the other cheek
Forgive those who trespass against you.
Christians in my experience tend to be more in love with all the vengeance
stuff that is real Old Testament stuff rather than loving thy neighbor and
live and let live.
Perhaps if you weren't such an arsehole towards them...
What they really desire is what all religions desire as that we will live by
their rules and by their leave.
Oh Really?
The way good Christians try to live their lives starts with "Love thy
neighbour as thyself."
If you can tell me what you think is wrong with that, then please try.
Yeah, well come on down to Jackson, Mississippi where they are leading the
fight to do an end run around the courts by legislating ridiculous
regulations at the State level to effectively close the last abortion clinic
the state has. I guess I should be glad they don't blow it up or kill the
doctors and staff outright.
They may indeed love their neighbors as they love themselves, but the
problem is that I don't agree with their idea of 'love' to begin with.
Again, you are looking at the loud minority that the majority feel
embarassed about.
Chris
